Johannes: It all starts with the mindset

You're currently having an incredible SHEKO success story. The kilos are melting away like there's no tomorrow. What was your starting point?

"You'll laugh: For months, my journey seemed like it would never begin. I 'd wanted to lose weight for a while, but I just couldn't overcome my inner resistance . Then in March, my clothes didn't fit anymore. That's when it 'clicked'. So, it was my mind that started it, before my body followed suit."

Do you think weight loss starts in the mind?

“Absolutely. I believe it’s our mindset that leads us to success. For me, that includes setting a precise goal and understanding why I’m doing something. I also try to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Instead of saying, ‘I can’t do it anyway,’ I tell myself, ‘Stay curious about where it leads you.’”

Scientists actually believe that you need to befriend your mindset to lose weight faster and live a healthier life. Of course, your mind alone won't make the pounds melt away. But it can help you reach your goal sooner. The key is to take the pressure off and be kinder to yourself. Setting unrealistic standards for yourself triggers negative feelings with the self-imposed pressure. Take chocolate, for example: you shouldn't forbid yourself from ever eating it again. Instead, make a point of creating conscious moments now and then to enjoy it in moderation.

And were you able to change it then?

More than just the weight changes.

You're under 100 kilos for the first time in a long time. What else has changed besides your weight?

"There's a lot. But let's start with how my day begins. The change starts with getting ready in the morning. When I squeegee the wet walls after showering, my knees don't crack anymore. When I take the stairs instead of the elevator later – which I always do now to get more exercise – I don't get out of breath anymore. And you can clearly see it in my blood pressure, which was considered critical at the beginning of the year during a check-up. Since I lost weight, it's back to normal."

"I've gained a lot more self-confidence and come across as more poised – both personally and professionally. Of course, this is partly because I simply feel more comfortable in my own skin. But it's also because I now see every day what I can achieve if I just persevere. Every time I reach another goal, I feel a little stronger. It's truly an indescribable feeling."
