Shocking moment on the scales

You and your partner have been successfully losing weight since last summer. How did that happen?

Silke: "Sascha and I were on vacation in August. We took lots of photos during our trip. I was looking forward to showing them to our friends and family when we got home. But when I looked at them myself, I was simply shocked at how much weight I had gained. That was the point where I thought: Okay, now you're going to change something."

So, the desire to lose weight was initially just yours? Or did Sascha join in right away?

“Sascha was there from day one. I told him about my plan – but didn’t think he’d join in. Especially not with the shakes. But then we drank our first shake together, were both immediately convinced by the taste, and decided to start our SHEKO story together.”

While Silke and Sascha were still on vacation, they ordered their first SHEKO can to be delivered to their home. Back home, they got started: they replaced two meals with the shake – breakfast and dinner.

"We also made sure that our third meal – our lunch – was balanced. And we started tracking calories with an app. It was important to us that we didn't consume too few calories. We had read that this lowers the basal metabolic rate and then tends to lead to the yo-yo effect."

The transition is easier together.

It sounds like you were super consistent from the start. Did you find the transition difficult?

"Not at all. And I think there are two reasons for that: Firstly, we knew exactly what we were losing weight for. I wanted to feel good about myself again and enjoy looking at photos from our holidays. Secondly, it helped incredibly that we started together. We motivated each other from the very beginning."

A study from the University of Connecticut investigated the so-called ripple effect. This effect suggests that couples who live together are more likely to lose weight. This is because a healthy, active lifestyle has a positive influence on those around us. Couples automatically motivate each other to eat more consciously and exercise more.

You can join our SHEKO community on Facebook to share your successes, support each other, and ask questions. The Ripple effect isn't just for couples; you can also benefit from it in groups with like-minded individuals.

Besides changing your diet, have you made any other changes in your life?

“We’ve really turned things upside down, yes. Especially when it comes to exercise. I have a job where I’m almost exclusively sedentary. My first goal was to reach 10,000 steps a day. When that was going quite well, Sascha and I started jogging. But really slowly and gently. An app helped us to gradually increase our pace. Eventually, we got so enthusiastic that we now exercise four times a week.”

Do you always go jogging together?

"Not always. But most of the time. It's even fun together in the rain. We also love going swimming. It adds some variety and is also easier on the joints."

Pleasure, a clear conscience, togetherness – nothing is lacking.

It's so cool to hear that you're on this journey together and that it's so easy for you. Many people think that losing weight is about deprivation. Now that you've gained so much experience: Can you agree?

"I'd be lying if I said you didn't need discipline. Sure, you have to adapt, and that includes stepping outside your comfort zone now and then. But I wouldn't describe it as deprivation. Especially not with SHEKO. We absolutely love the shakes. They're so naturally sweet that we hardly feel like snacking anymore. And if we do want a little chocolate, we don't feel guilty about eating a few pieces of dark chocolate. Simply because we know we're otherwise on the right track."

Speaking of the right way: How much weight have you lost so far?

"Sascha has lost 22 kilos. I've lost 12 kilos so far. My weight has plateaued at the moment, though. I've noticed that I'm also building muscle through my exercise – and muscle weighs more than fat. But I don't really want to lose much more weight. I feel really good right now. I can't wait to take photos again on my next vacation – because I'm sure of one thing: this time I won't be shocked. At most, in a good way."

Losing weight with SHEKO: Silke & Sascha's tips

1
Approach it consistently but slowly.

Silke and Sascha demonstrated discipline from day one and completely transformed their lives. But they did it gradually. While their initial goal was 'only' to walk 10,000 steps a day, they now exercise four times a week. They also eased into jogging, using an app to help them improve each time.

2
Organize healthy snacks

We've all been there: Suddenly you get a craving, but there's nothing healthy to eat around. Out of desperation, you reach for something that doesn't really fit into your plan. Silke's tip: She keeps healthy snacks like bananas or fruit pouches at work. That way, she's never tempted to indulge.

3
Give yourself time

It takes 66 days for new habits to become established in everyday life. You have to stick with them for this time until something feels completely normal. So be patient with yourself and your body.
